Tivat Airport (Serbian: Аеродром Тиват, "Aerodrom Tivat", Croatian: "Zračna luka Tivat") airport codes|TIV|LYTV is an international airport located 4 km (2.5 miles) from the centre of Tivat, Montenegro.

Overview

Tivat airport was built in 1971 with a single asphalt runway (14/32) of 2,500 meters (8,202 ft), 7 parking stands for airliners and a capacity of up to 6 aircraft movements per hour.

It is one of the two public airports in Montenegro, the other being Podgorica Airport. Both are operated by state-owned company "Airports of Montenegro" ("Aerodromi Crne Gore").

It has one passenger terminal that handles all traffic. It is a single-story building extensively refurbished in 2006. It has 11 check-in desks, a duty-free shop, car rental agencies and major Montenegrin Banks branch offices.

Tivat airport is located on the northern Adriatic coast of Montenegro. With mountains rising abruptly around Tivat airport and runway 32 that ends only 100 meters from the waters of the Bay of Kotor, it is a challenging approach and landing, rated 4D by the ICAO. Despite that harsh environment, there was no accident since its opening. Due to poorly illuminated mountanious terrain along the approach path, the airport is open only during daytime.

There are daily flights from Tivat to Belgrade throughout the year, while all other flights are heavily concentrated over the summer period. Tivat airport is mainly used by charter flights to the northern coastal resorts, being only 7 km away from Kotor and 20 km from the popular touristic city of Budva.

With the rapid development of the local real estate and the construction of Porto Montenegro, the airport has the fastest growing rate in number of passengers of any airport in the region. The growth is expected to slow down in 2008, however, because large Ilyushin Il-86s and Tupolev Tu-154s were redirected to Podgorica Airport, due to noise abatement.

In 2007, Tivat Airport served 573,914 passengers.
