Patti Adler

Patti Adler is not only considered to be one of the top experts in the field of Sociological Deviance, but she is also considered to be one of the best-known professors at the University of Colorado at Boulder. She currently teaches a class, Deviance in US Society, that enrolls 500 people every semester with a waiting list. She also teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in field research methods, and is a leading internationally known writer and speaker on this topic.

Education

Patti Adler is currently a professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder. After graduating from the Washington University in St. Louis with an A.B. in Sociology (1973) she continued her studies at the University of Chicago where she received a M.A. in Social Science (1974). She is also a University of California, San Diego Alumna where she received a M.A. in Sociology (1975) and eventually a Ph.D. (1984) from the University of California, San Diego.

Current Project

Since 2001 Adler had been studying self-injury. She researches people who engage in self-cutting, burning, branding, scratching, picking at skin or re-opening wounds, biting, head-banging, hair-pulling (trichotillomania), hitting (with a hammer or other object), and bone-breaking. She is one of the leading experts in this topic, and especially how people form Internet communities and relationships, and the way these impact on their selves. She has conducted interviews with over 100 people in different countries from the US to Canada, Great Britain, Germany, Bulgaria, Australia, New Zealand, Holland, and France. She is currently, with her husband, Peter Adler, writing a book on this topic.
