- Phyllis Shand Allfrey
Phyllis Shand Allfrey (1908 – 1986), a notable name in
West Indian literature , was born on the island ofDominica in the Caribbean. She is most famous for her only novel, 1953's "The Orchid House ", which was made in 1991 as aChannel 4 miniseries in the United Kingdom.In politics, she founded the
Dominica Labour Party , and was also the only (woman) minister of theWest Indies Federation .She also ran and wrote for a newspaper, " [http://www.uflib.ufl.edu/ufdc/?b=UF00072476 The Dominica Star] ", which lasted from 1965 until 1982.
She died in her native land in 1986. A posthumous collection of her short stories, "
