Pan-Serbism

Pan-Serbism

Pan-Serbism was a movement in 19th century that aimed at unity of all the Serbian people spread over Balkans.

Origins

Ilija Garašanin replaced all the "Slav" with "Serb" in the Pan-Slavism-Ideology and a Serbian-Nationalist movement was made. Pan-Serbism was simply an Anger against centuries of Turkish rule, resulting in modern Nationalism.

Ideology

Pan-Serbism is an affirmation of the Serbian pre-eminence over all Slav nationalities of the Balkan peninsula, and of its right of conquest over all the Slav lands south of the Danube. Its progress since it first appeared in the second half of the 19th century has been rapid, and its influence became immediately very great in all the elements of Serb society. Repulsed by Austria, who hoped to drive them away from Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Serbs directed their efforts towards the south, on the Ottoman, and towards the east, on the Bulgarian borders.

After a stalemate with the Bulgars in 1885, Serbs worked with the Bulgars towards defeating the Ottomans in the First Balkan war. Serb professors and diplomats, meanwhile, were affirming the essential Serbian identity of Macedonia, just as their Bulgarian counterparts did for their own side, thus paving the way for the population of the two countries accepting a war with Turkey as a viable option.

Pan-Serbism, later intermingled with Yugoslavism of South Slavs from Austria-Hungary, resulting in a unification of all Southern Slavs in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
