Svetlana Bazhanova

Svetlana Bazhanova

Svetlana Valeryevna Bazhanova ( _ru. Светлана Валерьевна Бажанова) (born 1 December 1972 in Chelyabinsk, Soviet Union, now Russia) is a former speed skater.

Svetlana Bazhanova married Vadim Sayutin, a fellow speed skater in 1994. In 2000, they moved to the Netherlands and lived there for several years, because of the much better training facilities. A funny thing happened while she was living in the Netherlands: Bazhanova was training very hard and got little time to relax. So at one point, after a training session, her feet had gotten swollen and she wanted to rest them before the next training session. So she lay down on the floor of the train travelling from Amsterdam to The Hague and put her bare feet up against the wall. At some point, a passer-by stopped and asked her what was wrong with her feet. But Bazhanova had only just started to learn Dutch and she wanted to reply "Mijn voeten zijn moe." ("My feet are tired."), but instead said "Mijn voeten zijn mooi." ("My feet are beautiful.")
