Time in Thailand

Thailand uses the UTC+7 time zone, with no observation of daylight saving time. The abbreviation for Thailand Standard Time is "THA".

In 2001, [ [http://www.math.nus.edu.sg/aslaksen/teaching/timezone.html Why is Singapore in the “Wrong” Time Zone? ] ] then-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra announced intentions to change the country's time zone to UTC+8 to be in line with Singapore, Malaysia, China, Hong Kong. This was met with much criticism and resistance, and the plan was withdrawn.

Thailand mainly uses the Buddhist Era which is 543 years ahead of the Gregorian year. The year AD 2006 is indicated as 2549 BE in Thailand.

Time notation

Next to the 12-hour and 24-hour clock system, a 6-hour clock system is also used, especially in spoken language. It counts 4 times from 1 to 6, with different additional words to make the distinction for night, morning, afternoon, and evening.

Thailand also adopted ISO 8601 under national standard: TIS 1111:2535 in 1992.
