Blanche Parry

Blanche Parry (c. 1507 – February 12 1590 in modern dating) was a personal attendant to Queen Elizabeth I of England.

Blanche came from a prominent family of Newcourt, Bacton, Herefordshire. Bilingual in Welsh and English, though brought up in a Welsh cultural environment, she attended Elizabeth from childhood arriving at Court with her aunt, Lady Troy and she stayed with Elizabeth until her (Blanche's) death, probably attending her in the Tower of London before she came to the throne. After Elizabeth's accession, Blanche was promoted to Chief Gentlewoman of the Privy Chamber. In 1565 she was appointed Keeper of the Queen's books and Jewels. Amongst the material rewards Blanche received from Elizabeth was Llangorse Lake and she acquired lands in Herefordshire and Yorkshire.

Blanche was a cousin of Sir William Cecil, Lord Burghley, and may have been very distantly related to Sir Thomas Parry, another faithful servant of the queen. Her great-niece, Eleanor (Whitney) Bull, owned the establishment where Christopher Marlowe was murdered in 1593.

A memorial effigy of Blanche serving the queen can be seen at Bacton Church, but she was buried in St Margaret's Church, Westminster. See biography 'Mistress Blanche, Queen Elizabeth I's confidante' by R.E.Richardson, published autumn 2007 by Logaston Press.
