Jaromil Jireš

Jaromil Jireš (10 Dec 1935–24 October 2001) was a prominent Czechoslovak "New Wave" filmmaker. [http://www.facets.org/asticat?function=web&catname=facets&web=features&path=/directors/jiresjaromil] He was best-known as the director of "Valerie and her Week of Wonders" which was based on a novel by Vítězslav Nezval and released in 1970. It is a surrealist film about the sexual awakening of a young woman presented in a Gothic style. [http://www.kinoeye.org/03/09/krzywinska09.php] The film features enough female nudity (including that of its 13-year-old lead) to be branded soft-core pornography [http://www.beatbots.com/view.php?video=22] , which was still considered taboo upon its release.
