Senai-Desaru Expressway, SDE, MES-E|22, is a new expressway under construction in Johor, Malaysia. It is also part of the Iskandar Malaysia "(formerly Iskandar Development Region)". It connects Senai in western Johor to Desaru in eastern Johor. The expressway measures a total length of 77 km (-- miles). Travelling time will be shorten from a 2 hour journey to a 45 minutes journey from Senai (west) to Desaru (east).

History

Previously, the Johor Bahru-Kota Tinggi Highway (Federal route JKR|3) and Pengerang Highway (Federal route JKR|92) was the only gateway to Desaru, with a typical journey of 2 hours. Construction of the expressway began in 2005. The construction is led by Senai Desaru Expressway Berhad with a main contractor, Ranhill Engineers & Constructors Sdn Bhd. The phase 1 of the expressway linking Senai to Pasir Gudang is scheduled to be ready by June 2008, with the rest of the project completed by December 2008.

Features

The tolled expressway will be a four-lane dual carriageway which improves road connection between western and eastern Johor. It features a closed toll system like the North-South Expressway. It will also be an alternative route to Desaru Beach, instead of Federal Route JKR|3 and JKR|92 from Johor Bahru and Singapore. The highway will also be the main access road to Desaru from North-South Expressway Southern Route MES-E|2 and major road link to Senai International Airport from Kota Tinggi and eastern parts of Johor. Construction of the bridge will include the 1.7 kilometre Sungai Johor Bridge, a cable stayed bridge across Johor River. When completed, it will become a major landmark of Johor and become the longest river bridge in Malaysia after Raja Pemaisuri Bainun Bridge (Sungai Dinding Bridge) in Perak.
