Rachel Judith Weil (1959- ) is a
teacher andscholar , specializing ingender andculture in 17th and 18th centuryEngland . She is currently anassociate professor of early modern English political and culturalhistory in the Department of History atCornell University inIthaca, NY . Weil received herB.A. degree fromBrown University in 1981 and herPh.D. fromPrinceton University in 1991 with a dissertation titled "Sexual Ideology and Political Propaganda in England 1680-1714". She has continued scholarly studies of the historical relationship of sexuality and politics in suchessay s as "Sometimes a Scepter is Only a Scepter: Pornography and Politics in Restoration England" (1993).Most recently, Weil published "Political Passions: Gender, the Family & Political Argument in England 1680-1714" (1999), a further examination of the political implications of
family and gender relationships in early modernEnglish history . She will publish another essay on political intrigue during this time period, "The Politics of Informing in the 1690s: Matthew Smith versus the 'Great Men'" in an upcoming collection titled "The Public Sphere in Early Modern England".References
