- Sportsman's Association
The Sportsman's Association was a small UK pro-shooting organisation.
History
The Sportsman's Association was formed in 1996 to campaign for the right of sports shooters to own
handguns . This was limited following theDunblane Massacre when Thomas Hamilton killed 16 children and their teacher using legally-heldpistols .The Organisation is believed to folded sometime in April or May 2008 following disputes within the management committee. Membership figures at that time were claimed to be around 4000 - 4500 (2008). The organisation website is still accessible, but has not been updated since March 2008.
Policy
The Sportsman's Association existed to fight for the restoration of target pistol shooting as a legitimate sport and for fair and effective firearms legislation as seen by ex-pistol shooters.
It also sought to defend shooting against what ex-pistol shootes saw as further unnecessary restriction by the authorities and to defend freedom of choice to pursue one's chosen sporting activity by:
Lobbying MPs, The Home Office & Parliament on behalf of our members.
Free advice on licensing matters to members of SAGBNI.
Free advice on game & deer stalking.
Postal competitions for both members & non-members.
Public liability insurance for members of SAGBNI.
Advice on firearms & ammunition.
Trade members offering discount to SAGBNI members. The organisation also claimed to support other field sports, but in practice was restricted to shooting sports.
