USNS "Sirius" (T-AFS 8) was a "Sirius"-class
combat stores ship of theUnited States Navy , named forSirius nowrap| (α Can. Maj.), the brightest visiblestar ."Sirius" was built by Swan Hunter & Wigham Richardson for the
Royal Navy . Laid down in1965 , she was launched in1966 fromWallsend as RFA "Lyness" (A339). She was transferred from the BritishRoyal Fleet Auxiliary to the U.S. Navy'sMilitary Sealift Command in1981 ."Sirius" was deactivated and struck from the
Naval Vessel Register in2005 and transferred toTexas A&M University at Galveston 'sTexas Maritime Academy to serve as atraining ship where she was renamed TS "Texas Clipper III".References
