Kolovai

Kolovai

Kolovai is a village composed of approximately 800 people, located in the Western District (Vahe Hihifo) of Tongatapu island, in the Kingdom of Tonga.

Kolovai is a community that is known for its well-maintained appearance and active local pride. Kolovai hosts a Health Center, a banquet and concert hall, two primary schools, and the Western District Youth Hall and Computer Center (established by the US Peace Corps). Kolovai is the home of Prince okinaUlukālala Lavaka Ata, the former Prime Minister of Tonga, and his wife, Princess Nanasipauokinau Tukuokinaaho. Kolovai is also famous for its peka colony (fruit bats, otherwise known as flying foxes).

Kolovai is situated on a peninsula with its east side facing a vast lagoon, offering vistas of magnificent sunrises, and its west side open to the grand Pacific Ocean, which makes for unforgettable sunset viewings. On the ocean side lays the renowned Good Samaritan Resort, most well known for its Friday night dinner show and performance. Next to the Good Samaritan lies the busy Masiata Beach and Picnic Area, possibly the most popular beach in the Kingdom. Kolovai also has historical significance. It was this village that welcomed Reverend Thomas, Tonga's first successful Christian missionary. (Cokevernal, Keitahi).
