Afro prog

Afro prog

Afro prog is a term that has been used to describe music of the late 1960s and 1970s that has both a distinct African cultural flavour as well as a progressive rock approach.

In the late 1960s, artists around the world were experimenting with combining rock music in new ways with established styles of music like classical, jazz and Afro-Cuban. Musicians of African heritage were also combining African and African-American styles with rock in a progressive fashion. This trend reached its peak in the early 1970s and then faded from mainstream attention.

Bands that have been described as Afro prog include Assagai, Mandrill and Osibisa. These bands were active in the early 1970s, the heyday of progressive rock music.

In 2005, Afroprog saw a resurrection in the San Francisco Bay Area with the band The Flux.
