affiliations =KNON (89.3 FM) is a
radio station broadcasting acommunity radio format. Licensed toDallas, Texas it serves the Dallas-Fort Worth area and is owned by Agape Broadcasting Foundation, Inc. KNON (for NON-commercial) is a non-profit, listener-supported radio station, deriving its main source of income from on-air pledge drives and from underwriting or sponsorships by local small businesses.KNON is on the air 24 hours, seven days a week. The
volunteer disc jockey s play their own music or conduct talk shows during specifically targeted programs to a variety of unique demographics.History
KNON traces its beginning to KCHU (FM 90.9 FM), a non-commercial FM that went on air August 29, 1975. KCHU operated until September 1977, when it went off the air owing to financial shortfalls. The station remained silent through 1980, which was then a license renewal year in Texas (radio stations then operated on a three year license cycle). At the same time, Criswell Bible Institute (now
Criswell College ) operated KCBI-FM from a downtown Dallas rooftop with 1,500 watts on 89.3 FM. They aspired to raise power and height and to relocate to the Cedar Hill, Texas tower farm, and faced limitations. When they applied to take over KCHU's 90.9 FM, a legal and FCC struggle ensued. The end result was a swap of frequencies, a settlement of litigation, and the return of KCHU, now renamed KNON, to the air.KNON went on air August 6, 1983 with 10,000 watts from a site in West Dallas known as Chalk Hill . The station moved to an antenna on Cedar Hill in March 1990 with 55,000 watts at 850 feet above average terrain using a fairly directional antenna vs. a typical 100,000 watts at 1,600 feet (non-directional) of other stations.
