- Royal School of Military Survey
The Defence College of Intelligence Royal School of Military Survey (DCI RSMS) is a joint services training facility associated with the Corps of
Royal Engineers (RE) but attached to the United KingdomDefence Intelligence and Security Centre (DISC). The school is divided into five wings specialising in: geodesy and navigation, imagery, geospatial information management, geospatial information exploitation, and map design and production.The courses taught at RSMS range in duration from three days to 14 months. The primary activity of RSMS is training of RE geographic technicians and surveyor engineers.Many additional courses are offered attracting students from throughout the defence geospatial community including members of UK and foreign uniformed and civilian services.
The premier course offered by RSMS is the 14 month
Army Survey Course (ASC). The ASC is a demanding program focusing on the various fields pertaining to geospatial information and its application within the defence community. Successful completion of the ASC results in the conferment of an MSc in Defence Geographic Information fromCranfield University . In this relationship RSMS is responsible for course content, while Cranfield University is involved with oversight and program accreditation. Cranfield University and RSMS faculty meet regularly to ensure that each student is attaining the high standards required for graduation. Fully successful students graduate from Cranfield University,Defence College of Management and Technology ,Shrivenham during the July following the course. Starting in 2009, several changes to the course will be made and the MSc conferred will be in Geospatial Intelligence. This is in keeping with the evolution of defence survey and will be very little more than a name change.Additional courses which result in conferment of a certification or Post Graduate Diploma (PGDip) are offered in conjunction with
Sheffield Hallam University .The school is based at Denison Barracks in Hermitage, Royal County of
