"BMX XXX" is a controversial 2002video game published byAcclaim Entertainment for theXbox , GameCube, andPlayStation 2 . It was developed byZ-Axis . It is aBMX game speckled with crude humor andnudity . The game allows the player to create riders astopless women inunderwear bottoms and "unlock"full motion video clips ofstripper s in action. Consequently, "BMX XXX" was denied classification inAustralia . While the game is available fully uncensored on the GameCube and the Xbox, the AmericanPlayStation 2 version has notopless riders and thestripper footage is censored with small BMX XXX logos over thenipples . Because of this, the reception by the public was luke-warm.Relationship to Dave Mirra
BMX XXX builds on the earlier work done by Z-Axis on "
Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX ". The development title was "Dave Mirra BMX XXX" [cite news |authorlink=http://www.ign.com |title=E3 2002: Dave Mirra BMX XXX |url=http://videogames.yahoo.com/news-1111017 |publisher=Yahoo Video Game News |date=2002-05-22 |accessdate=2007-11-27 ] , and althoughDave Mirra refused to endorse the product and obtained legal documents to the effect that his name would not be used, it was initially hyped and offered to the press with his name attached [cite news |authorlink=http://www.ign.com |title=Dave Mirra Sues Acclaim |url=http://videogames.yahoo.com/news-1118429 |publisher=Yahoo Video Game News |date=2003-02-14 |accessdate=2007-11-27 ] . It was only after direct legal action that he succeeded in preventing the use of his name on the product [cite news |authorlink=http://www.ign.com |title=Dave Mirra Sues Acclaim |url=http://videogames.yahoo.com/news-1118429 |publisher=Yahoo Video Game News |date=2003-02-14 |accessdate=2007-11-27 ] .Controversy
The game was originally intended to be a Dave Mirra title without nudity [cite news |authorlink=http://www.ign.com |title=Dave Mirra Sues Acclaim |url=http://videogames.yahoo.com/news-1118429 |publisher=Yahoo Video Game News |date=2003-02-14 |accessdate=2007-11-27 ] , but it is generally believedViews needing attribution|date=August 2007 in the industry that the game was of low quality Fact|date=August 2007 - its average review in the gaming media was 60% [ [http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/cube/bmxxxx?q=BMX%20XXX Metacritic] ] , which is considered to be average or poor — and that Acclaim decided late in the game's development to attempt to create a controversy and hopefully prop up sales by including some nudity [cite news |authorlink=http://www.ign.com |title=Dave Mirra Sues Acclaim |url=http://videogames.yahoo.com/news-1118429 |publisher=Yahoo Video Game News |date=2003-02-14 |accessdate=2007-11-27 ] . The attempt at publicity was rather successful, although the publicity achieved was of the wrong sort for Acclaim; with television reports that Wal-Mart, Toys R Us, and most major
IEMA retailers in the United States declined to carry the game in their stores due to the nudity. Consequently, sales were poor: under 100,000 copies were soldFact|date=August 2007. The game was not greeted with controversy or with much sales interest in Europe, while it was sold with the sexual content removed in Australia [cite news |authorlink=http://www.gamepower.com.au/ |title=Acclaim Australia: BMX XXX Interview |url=http://www.gamepower.com.au/?aid=1069 |publisher=Game Power Australia |coauthor=Daniel Armstrong |date=2002-11-08 |accessdate=2007-11-27] .oundtrack
