Hutton Grammar School is a Church of England Voluntary Aided Secondary Comprehensive School in Preston, Lancashire, England. It is day school for boys-only for ages of 11 and 16, while the Sixth Form contains both boys and girls. In September 2005, there were 788 pupils on roll — 613 boys in the Main School, and 175 boys and girls in the Sixth Form.

The school is in 5th place in the league tables for comprehensive schools in the North-West and 2nd place for AS-A2 results.

History

The School can trace its antecedents back to 1552 with the school being opened by Henry VIII. The grammar school was originally on the site of Priory Technology College after the original monastery was knocked down by the king. The school then moved to its Hutton site in 1742 where the school was able to select it pupils. In the 1970s Hutton Grammar School accepted a comprehensive intake.

There is no selection at Hutton, though the school still retains its grammar school ethos, which enables it to produce KS3 and GCSE results which are amongst the highest in the area. Former pupils of the school are known as 'Old Huttonians'. The Old Huttonian Association was formed on 15th January 1921 and continues to this day.

Curriculum

Hutton offers subjects in many areas to the students. The standard curriculum beginning in year 7 includesEnglish, Mathematics, Religious Studies, PE & Games, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Technology, ICT, French/German, Geography, Art, Classical Studies, Form Period, Citizenship and Library Studies.

English, Mathematics, Religious Studies, PE & Games, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, ICT and Citizenship. Library Studies are also undertaken in Year 7, while Technology is studied in Years 7 to 9.

In Years 10 and 11, students get a choice of specialist subjects including Economics, Geography, Separate Sciences, History, Music, Art, Classical Studies, German/French or additional ICT.

The Director of Hutton Sixth Form is Louise Sissons, supported by assistant Director John Hill. The Sixth Form is a quasi-autonomous body within Hutton Grammar School.

Facilities

Under headmaster David Pearson the school has been redeveloped, with facilities such as a new gymnasium and I.T and Mathematics suites. The Music Department now has recording studios and technology suites.

In September 2005, new maths facilities were opened. Following the opening of the new maths suites in the autumn of 2005, the buildings were used for housing of the resistant materials and art until the end of the academic year 2006 while their departments were being refurbished. The buildings were demolished in the months of July and August 2006 and then in July 2006 a new music and drama suite was opened The school has now extended the sixth form block for extra capacity and an interior refurbishment.
