- Lakeland Motor Museum
Lakeland Motor Museum is located in
Holker Hall inGrange-over-Sands ,England and features a wide range of classic motor vehicles.History
The museum was established in
1978 by Donald Joseph Sidebottom a wealthy Fylde Coast industrialist who had previously kept his large collection of automobile ephemera in a large barn in Lancashire. This visitor attraction, which spans over 100 years of motoring history, has been housed in the former Shire Horse Stables at Holker Hall since 1978. Due to the ever growing collections which have outgrown the available space, there are plans to move the Museum to the site of the former Dolly Blue Dye Works carton packaging sheds at nearby
Backbarrow .The building plans were unanimously approved by the Lake District National Park Authority Planning Committee in September 2007. The new museum is scheduled to open in Easter 2009. The collection
The collection features over 30,000 motoring related exhibits including a 1920s garage re-creation and an exhibition relating to
Donald Campbell and his land speed records.Don Sidebottom is an avid fan of the late Donald and Malcolm Campbell. He has established an ever growing Campbell exhibition at Holker Hall. He bought the salvaged remains of Campbell's Water Speed boat
Bluebird K7 , which originally sank in 1967, when it was recently recovered, for the sum of £1.00. He also owns the "Bluebird" trademark. He loves freefall skydiving and often parachutes in at Holker Hall. He is a fan of modern architecture and his former home was designed by famed North-west architect Keith Ingram, who also designed the futuristic Preston Bus Station. Also present in the collection is the Pelland Steam Car in which
Peter Pellandine attempted, up to 1991 (unsuccessfully), to break the Land Speed Record for a steam-powered car.References
