It offers a classical curriculum, including studies inLatin and Greek.Established in 1885, the Barlaeusgymnasium is the oldest of the three gymnasia, although its origins stretch back to the "Latijnse scholen" (Latin schools) whose existence is documented as far back as 1594. It is named after
Caspar Barlaeus . The name was altered in 1936. Before this it was known as Het Stedelijk Gymnasium. Famous alumni include politiciansFrits Bolkestein ,Els Borst and writerWillem Frederik Hermans .
