"El Abayarde" is the debut album by Tego Calderón. It is one of the very first commercially successful albums in Reggaeton. It included the singles Pa' Que Retocen, Guasa Guasa and Al Natural. It is considered to be a classic in the Reggaeton Genre. It was originally released independently in 2002 through White Lion Records selling over 75,000 copies its first week between Puerto Rico and some parts of the United States. Despite heavy bootlegging internationallly due to the album's lack of availability worldwide it was stil able to sell over 300,000 copies. It would eventually be internationally distributed by Sony BMG in 2003. It was a groundbreaking album not only for its commercial success, but also due to its lyrical and social content. It is considered as the album that took reggaeton outside of Puerto Rico and internationalized the genre.
