Garry St. Jean

Garry St. Jean is a former professional basketball coach and executive.

St. Jean has been the head coach of two NBA teams. From 1992 through 1997, he coached the Sacramento Kings. He later became the general manager of the Golden State Warriors, and in 2000 he doubled as a head coach after P.J. Carlesimo was fired.

Criticism

During his tenure as general manager for the Golden State Warriors, St. Jean brought in several players, such as Mark Price, Terry Cummings, John Starks, and Mookie Blaylock, who were well past their primes. He also drafted several flops, like Chris Porter and Vonteego Cummings. St. Jean did, however, draft the future 2-time NBA slam dunk champion Jason Richardson (from Michigan State), who would become a key player on the team until the end of the 2006-2007 season, when he was traded to the Charlotte Bobcats.

In 2002, with rising star Antawn Jamison leading the team, the Warriors seemed like a team on the rise, but a string of injuries kept them from making an impact in the suddenly ultra-competitive Western Conference. In an effort to rebuild the team on the fly, St. Jean committed money to players such as Jason Caffey and Chris Mills, but as a result was unable to re-sign up-and-coming star Gilbert Arenas, despite the fact that Arenas wanted to stay in Golden State. As a result, St. Jean was fired as GM of the Warriors in 2004.
