Garry St. Jean is a former professional
basketball coach and executive.St. Jean has been the head coach of two NBA teams. From 1992 through 1997, he coached the
Sacramento Kings . He later became the general manager of theGolden State Warriors , and in 2000 he doubled as a head coach afterP.J. Carlesimo was fired.Criticism
During his tenure as general manager for the Golden State Warriors, St. Jean brought in several players, such as
Mark Price ,Terry Cummings , John Starks, andMookie Blaylock , who were well past their primes. He also drafted several flops, likeChris Porter andVonteego Cummings . St. Jean did, however, draft the future 2-time NBAslam dunk championJason Richardson (fromMichigan State ), who would become a key player on the team until the end of the 2006-2007 season, when he was traded to theCharlotte Bobcats .In 2002, with rising star
Antawn Jamison leading the team, the Warriors seemed like a team on the rise, but a string of injuries kept them from making an impact in the suddenly ultra-competitive Western Conference. In an effort to rebuild the team on the fly, St. Jean committed money to players such asJason Caffey andChris Mills , but as a result was unable to re-sign up-and-coming starGilbert Arenas , despite the fact that Arenas wanted to stay in Golden State. As a result, St. Jean was fired as GM of the Warriors in 2004.
