governor of the U.S. state ofIndiana from 1880 to 1881 and from 1885 to 1889. He was a member of theUnited States Democratic Party .Political career
He first became governor in 1880 when governor
James D. Williams died. He left office two months later when Williams's term expired without any major accomplisments.Gray was elected governor for his own four-year term in 1884. During his term he oversaw the redistricting of the entire state for the
Indiana General Assembly elections. He was widely criticized by the minority party for creatingGerrymander districts to weaken their electoral base. All the of the redistricting was eventually overturned by the state supreme court.
