The airline was established in
1979 as Vee Neal Airlines (named after its owner vee Neal Frey) and began operating from Latrobe,Pennsylvania . On1 May 1980 the operation was expanded to include scheduled air services between Latrobe and Pittsburgh with aCessna 402 . The airline was renamed to Jetstream International Airlines (JIA) in December,1983 to reflect the fact that it had just taken delivery of two Jetstream aircraft. A year later the airline moved from Latrobe toErie, Pennsylvania . On26 September 1985 the airline affiliated itself with Piedmont Airlines and on1 August 1986 JIA became a wholly owned subsidiary. Following theUSAir acquisition of Piedmont in November1987 , JIA began operating as Allegheny Commuter from the USAir hub inPhiladelphia . On1 July 1988 JIA became a wholly owned subsidiary of USAir and began operating in the colors of US Air Express, laterUS Airways Express Flight International 12-18 April 2005] . OnNovember 1 ,1995 USAir renamed the recently acquired JIA to PSA in order to protect the trademark ofPacific Southwest Airlines , which was once a large carrier on the West Coast thatUSAir had acquired. Since the acquisition by US Airways, PSA has transitioned from a fleet ofturboprop aircraft to an all-jet fleet.
