GLORIA sidescan sonar

The GLORIA sidescan sonar is a sidescan SONAR-based system for determining the topography of the ocean floor. GLORIA stands for Geological Long Range Inclined Asdic. [http://www.springerlink.com/content/q3g86p278t08838p/ Rusby et al 1973]

Like most side-scan sonars, the GLORIA instrument is a "fish" which is towed behind a ship. GLORIA has a ping rate of two per minute, and detects returns from a range of up to 22 km either side of the sonar fish. It therefore lives up to its claim of being a long range instrument.
