Fritz Albert Lipmann (
June 12 1899 –July 24 1986 ) was a German-Americanbiochemist and a co-discoverer in 1945 ofcoenzyme A . For this, together with other research on coenzyme A, he was awarded half theNobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1953.Lipmann was born in
Königsberg ,Germany to aJewish family.Lipmann studied medicine at the
University of Königsberg , Berlin, and Munich, graduating in Berlin in 1924. He returned to Königsberg to study chemistry under ProfessorHans Meerwein . In 1926 he joinedOtto Meyerhof at theKaiser Wilhelm Institute , Berlin, for his Ph.D. thesis. After that he followed Meyerhof toHeidelberg to the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Medical Research.From 1939 lived and worked in the
USA . From 1949 to 1957 he was professor of biological chemistry atHarvard Medical School . From 1957 onwards, he taught and conducted research atRockefeller University , New York City. He was awarded theNational Medal of Science in 1966.External links
