Windsor, Ontario .History
Assumption was founded by the Basilian Fathers in 1870 as part of Assumption University, which is now part of the University of Windsor. Assumption was at first a private boarding school for male students only, but in the late 1960's/early 1970's, evolved into a co-educational secondary school within the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board.
Assumption offers a range of secondary programs including the
IB Diploma Programme , as well asCo-op ,OYAP ,MOYAP and others. Assumption's student population has decreased significantly since the early/mid 1990's. Today the school has a current population of approximately 650 students. This secondary school is now among the smallest in the Windsor-Essex County Area, but was at one time (as recently as the mid 1980's) one of the largest secondary schools in Canada with approximately 3000 students, and boasted a tradition of excellence in both academics and sports that was second to none. The current principal is Sherrilynn Colley-Vegh
International Baccalaureate Program
The IB programme has experienced notable success. Mme. Genevieve Cano, one of the program's French teachers, is the director of this International programme. Starting in 2004, it has attracted over 130 students. This number is expected to increase due to the airing of a commercial on A channel which started in January 2007. Assumption College School is the only IB public school in Windsor; the only other IB school within proximity to the city is Academie Ste. Cecile International School, which is a private school. Although Villanova High School has attempted to get an IB certificate program, they have yet to receive one because of a lack of qualified IB teachers.
The IB programme offers motivated students a chance to prepare themselves for University by offering a more challenging curriculum as well as a more international perspective on education. There are qualified teachers for math, history, biology, French, English, and art, teaching the Grade 11 and 12 IB curriculum. The number of applicants for entry to the programme more than doubles every year. As of now, there are approximately 50 students presently in the IB programme, as it officially commences in the 11th grade, with around 80 students in the pre IB program.
There have also been many criticisms within the IB program. Many students find there is too much pressure and in the end wish they never had signed up for it. It can often center out students as well as being 'IB's', and they often do not fit in with the other students.
