The World Financial Center is a complex of buildings across
West Street from theWorld Trade Center site inLower Manhattan inNew York City , overlooking theHudson River . This complex is home to offices of major corporations includingMerrill Lynch andAmerican Express as well asDow Jones and itsWall Street Journal division among others. The entire complex is owned byBrookfield Properties , except for the space occupied by American Express.Designed by
César Pelli , with Adamson Associates, the complex was built byOlympia and York between 1985 and 1988 onlandfill used to buildBattery Park City . The fill material came from dirt excavated during the building of theWorld Trade Center , as well as garbage, dirt and debris.Portions of the complex, especially the Winter Garden, were severely damaged in the
September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks , but have since been reopened after significant repairs.Buildings
