Regularly referred to by producers as “TV’s Fastest Carpenter” Jimmy Little is a little bit lounge kitsch and a little bit rock-and-roll. Combining a background in carpentry and construction with formal training in Scenic Design and Architecture, he is known not only for his signature Vans shoes, but also for his lightning-fast building, and his straight-forward design style.

Growing up a contractor’s son (and grandson, for that matter), he always knew he would build for a living. After 10 years of building and remodeling with his father, who still owns the family-run contracting company in northern Virginia, he went off to college at James Madison University in the Blue Ridge Mountains. After 5 years there, going through majors in Music, Architecture, and Theatre, he left to pursue a career in Scenic Design and theatre in New York City.

After years of working for special-event designers and picking up freelance theatre gigs, he got the crazy idea to hit the road as a Broadway Stagehand. After 9 tours and 7 years, he came back to New York and, quite accidentally, fell into his new career.

Doing lighting for a special event in the eastern Long Island town of East Hampton, he got a random call from a casting agent for a new series on TLC. This agent had seen a video that a friend of Jimmy’s had made of him being crazy and building some stuff. Jimmy hopped on a train back to New York and went in for the first audition of his life. Three weeks later, he packed up and moved to Jeffersonville, NY for 5 weeks to tape the first season of “Town Haul.”

During the life of “Town Haul” Jimmy proved to be a quick, extraordinary carpenter and a pretty good TV host. As a result, and thanks to Genevieve Gorder, he got a guest spot on “Trading Spaces,” which ended up turning into a recurring spot for over a dozen episodes.

After “Trading Spaces” ended, (the first time) Jimmy moved back to New York, this time settling down in Brooklyn. He began working for himself, still freelancing in the theatre world, but also building custom cabinetry and furniture around the city. His work can be seen everywhere from a lower east side studio to, literally, the largest apartment in New York City.

Once again, out of the blue, Jimmy gets a call from an old producer friend from his “Town Haul” days. This producer is working on a new show for HGTV. Jimmy signs up to build for the show, and 6 seasons later, “Don’t Sweat It” is still going strong as one of the networks highest rated shows.

Personal life

Jimmy currently lives in his Brooklyn apartment with his “daughter” a spunky Boston Terrier named Isabelle Marie. Despite 4 successful years on TV, Jimmy still knows where he came from, but isn’t sure where he’ll end up. “But that’s the fun of it, isn’t it?”

Jimmy is relatively modest, and generally a laid-back, nice guy. But he has an edge. He’s not afraid to share his opinions on work, personalities, or world affairs. Says Jimmy:

“It’s better to be lucky than good, but it’s best to be both.”
