Don Herbert (firefighter)

Don Herbert (firefighter)

Don Herbert (May 7, 1961 – February 21, 2006) was an American firefighter based in Buffalo, New York. He was injured while fighting a residential fire in December 1995, when he was struck by debris following a roof collapse. After being deprived of oxygen for 12 minutes, he fell into a coma.

He awoke over nine years later on April 30, 2005, after being treated over a three-month period with an experimental new drug cocktail. This treatment had usually been reserved for patients with ADHD and/or Parkinson's disease.

Herbert remained fully conscious for 14 hours; spending that time catching up with his family before returning to a quieter state. He maintained the ability to interact with his family until his death on February 21, 2006, but never again at that same level of acuity.

Leaving behind a wife and four sons, Don Herbert was buried with departmental honors.
