- High Uintas Preservation Council
The High Uintas Preservation Council (HUPC) is a
conservationist organization in theUnited States based inHyrum, Utah .The HUPC endeavors to preserve and restore the integrity of the High Uintas ecosystem, Utah’s most biologically diverse area. Through public participation, HUPC encourages the
U.S. Forest Service to adhere to ecological principles of forest management.Because the Uintas harbor the headwaters of all of Utah's major river systems, HUPC also seeks protection of free-flowing rivers through better management and inclusion in the Wild and Scenic River System.
HUPC advocates restoration of native extirpated wildlife and protection of rare/sensitive/
threatened species in the High Uintas ecosystem, includingwolverine ,lynx , wolf, andBonneville cutthroat trout . They also oppose the introduction of non-native fish and terrestrial wildlife.Specific goals of HUPC include:
* Maintain and restore the wilderness/wild, roadless characteristics on nearly 1,000,000 acres (4,047 km²) of the High Uintas ecosystem.
* Seek congressional
wilderness designation on over 250,000 acres (1,012 km²) of roadless lands contiguous to the 460,000 acre (1,862 km²)High Uintas Wilderness .* Seek congressional wilderness designation on some 75,000 acres (304 km²) of the Lakes Roadless Area as the Mt. Watson Wilderness.
