Edward (Ted) Burgin (born
29 April ,1927 in Bradfield,Sheffield ) was a professional footballer who played forSheffield United between 1949-57 as agoalkeeper . He was nicknamed "The Cat" by his teammates.He started his career with
Alford Town , but asked for his release in 1948 and was signed by United after undergoing successful trials. His debut came in a Second Division game against Swansea City onSeptember 1 ,1949 and despite being only 5 feet 7 inches (1.70metres ), he was regarded as one of the best goalkeepers inEngland while with United.After 314 appearances for United, including 281 League games and 20
FA Cup ties, he moved toDoncaster Rovers . He made 102 consecutive league appearances betweenNovember 12 ,1949 andMarch 15 ,1952 . He was an ever-present in 3 League seasons, 1950-51, 1952-53 and 1953-54. In 1958, he joinedLeeds United making 58 appearances for theWest Yorkshire side. In 1960, he joined Rochdale and made 207 appearances for "The Dale".He toured
Australia with the F.A. team in 1951 and was England reserve for a match with Austria in 1953. He was also in England's World Cup squad in 1954, although he did not feature in any of their matches.heffield United Career
