Július Jakoby

Július Jakoby

Július (Gyula) Jakoby (*March 28, 1903 in Košice – †April 15, 1985 in Košice) was one of the most important Slovak painters of the second half of the 20th century.

He is a significant and essentially lone figure of Slovak fine art. The artist’s work grew in the avant-garde environment of 1920’s Košice, and unquestionably contributed to the creation of the tradition of a modern painting in Košice in the 20th century. With his expressive painting Július Jakoby inclined to new figurative values of European painting.

The works of Július Jakoby are exhibited in National Galleries in Bratislava, Prague and Budapest and in many Slovak galleries, museums and private collections. However, they are especially represented in the collections of the East Slovak Gallery in Košice.
