- Michillinda Avenue (Pasadena)
-
Michillinda Avenue in Pasadena, California, basically marks the easternmost boundary of the city. Michillinda starts at its south end at Huntington Drive and continues north to a terminus at the base of the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains at the intersection of Carriage House Road. It has a total length of just under 3 miles (4.8 km).
One source of the name has been attributed to a compilation of the names of three states: Michigan, Illinois, and Indiana. A man named Forbes, who laid out an early addition to Pasadena, was the son of one of the founders of an association of summer cottages in Michigan for which the name was created in the 1890s, originally hyphenated Mich-Ill-Inda.
Also, the original owner of Hastings Ranch, Charles Cook Hastings, has also been credited for naming the street after his to children Michael and Linda. In 1882, Charles Cook Hastings bought 1,100 acres (4.5 km2) of land for just $7 an acre, and established Hastings Ranch.
Above the cross street of Orange Grove Avenue, Michillinda bounds the city of Sierra Madre. Below, it bounds the city of Arcadia.
