Patrick Neeson Lynch (
March 10 ,1817 -February 26 ,1882 ) was the Catholicbishop of Charleston, South Carolina, during theAmerican Civil War .He was born in Kibberidog, Clones, Monaghan,
Ireland , and ordained to thepriest hood in Charleston in 1840 and consecrated as bishop in 1858. OnFebruary 20 , 1864 he was named by PresidentJefferson Davis of theConfederate States of America to be itsdelegate to theHoly See which maintained diplomatic relations in the name of thePapal States .Pope Pius IX was one of few leaders around the world who recognized the Confederacy, although the pope would become an ardent critic of established slavery.
