Helena High School

Helena High School is, along with Capital High School, one of two high schools in the Helena School District #1.

The school mascot is the Bengal.

Faculty

Foreign Language Department

Four foreign languages are taught at Helena High: French, German, Latin, and Spanish. Lance Dyrdahl is the Latin teacher. Spanish is taught by Sarah Van Stry, Linda Ringwald, Julie Pederson, and Danna Sinnott. Susan Bartels and Jane Mends both teach French, and Toni Person is the sole German teacher.

cience Department

The science faculty at Helena High School consists of Doug Shenkle, Mike Smith, Jan Hill, Jim Schulz, Joe Veneziano, Missy Sampson, Julie Beaver, Rod Benson, Gerald McCarthy, and Sandy Wardell.

English Department

The English Department, with twenty-two faculty, offers instruction in English I,II,III, and IV, as well as a variety of elective studies. Students are encouraged to embrace the challenge of honors instruction at each of the first three levels and Advanced Placement English during their senior year. Elective offerings include Debate, Speech, Journalism, Studies in Science Fiction, Word Clues, and Creative Writing. An AP Language elective for juniors and seniors is currently in the planning stage, anticipated in 2009-2010.

*Colin Meloy, the lead singer and songwriter for the Portland, Oregon, folk-rock band The Decemberists.

*Maile Meloy, born in Helena in 1972 and attended Helena High School, has written three novels and several short stories. She is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and has been named one of Granta's 21 Best Young American Novelists
*Dan Carpenter, Attended Helena High School, is now a placekicker for the Miami Dolphins
