Kenton-on-Sea, Eastern Cape

Kenton-on-Sea, Eastern Cape

Kenton-on-Sea, more commonly known as Kenton, is a small coastal town on the Sunshine Coast, in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. It is situated between the Bushman's River and the Kariega River, and lies approximately half way between the industrial centres of East London (180km) and Port Elizabeth (130km).

Kenton has a population of only about 1000 people, but is a popular holiday resort, and the population triples over the period of the December Summer holidays. The area has many pristine beaches and green rolling hills, and a nature reserve along the shore ensures that no housing developments can spoil the coast.

Unusually for a small town in South Africa, Kenton is predominantly English-speaking, while Boesmansriviermond on the opposite banks of the Bushman's River, is predominantly Afrikaans-speaking. Being in the Eastern Cape, the townships and surrounding areas are Xhosa-speaking.

Famous Locals

Patty Massive is a famous / infamous Kentonian. He grew up on a dairy farm on the outskirts and completed his schooling at the local Kenton High. His rise to fame was largely due to the wild parties he would throw at his farm every high season. The parties, aptly named Kingstaan, rapidly grew in popularity and by the year 2000 would draw in crowds in their thousands. Due to extensive damage and teenage pregnancy at the 2003 party, Patty was forced to shutdown the parties and move to Cape Town to avoid furious locals.

While living in Cape Town, Patty didn't show any signs of slowing and by early 2005 had developed a severe case of liver failure and was finally forced to hang up his party shoes. He can still be found at the odd local beach party or braai but is much tamer and has lost his significant stature due to his drastic change in lifestyle.
