Cebrene – also spelled Kebrene or Kevrin, and for a time called Alexandria ( _el. Αλεξάνδρεια) and also Antiochia in Troad ( _el. Αντιόχεια της Τρωάδας) – was an ancient city in the
Troad , a region of northwestAnatolia . The ruins of the city are situated on theSimois river, a left tributary of theScamander (now theKüçük Menderes ) river, approximately 10km south ofBayramiç inCanakkale Province , in theAsia n part ofTurkey . After the death ofAntigonus in281 BC , the city was taken byAntiochus I who renamed the city for himself. The city and its surrounding region, called Cebrenia, appear inStrabo 's "Geography" (Book XIII, ch. 33). Strabo reports that the inhabitants of Cebrene (the Cebreni) and those of nearbyScepsis were rivals, but that both cities' populations were transferred to Antigonia (laterAlexandria Troas ) on the coast.References
