- Headswim
Headswim were an indie-rock band formed in
Essex England in1992 by ex-Blinderfrontman andguitarist Dan Glendining and his brother, drummer Tom Glendining. The line-up was completed by their friend Clovis Taylor onbass guitar and localmusician Nick Watts on keyboards. They released two EPs, "Tense Nervous Head" and "Moment of Union" in their first year together - these made enough of an impression for them to be signed bySony Music in 1994. The band refined their grungy,Pearl Jam sound for their debutalbum , 1994's "Flood". The lead-off single "Crawl " fared well in UKradio charts and the band embarked on their first extensive tour of the UK andEurope .However the death soon after of Dan and Tom's brother Matthew, who had fought a long battle with
leukaemia , had a profound effect on the group. Dan and Tom took some time to regroup and Headswim re-emerged in 1997 with their second album, "Despite Yourself " which contained many cathartic songs about death and spirituality, adopting a more sombre tone more akin to artists such asRadiohead andJeff Buckley . The single "Torniquet" reached the Top 30 in theUK Singles Chart and was a minor radio hit in the U.S. Soon after, the band supportedKula Shaker on a U.S. tour. Commercially the band were underperforming though and Sony made the decision to drop them. Subsequent to this the band managed only one single, "Dusty Road", released in the UK on an independent label (Pet Sounds), before they split up in 2001.The Glendining brothers went to form BlackCar.
