"The Ballad of Auntie Vogue/Manscare" was a double A-side single from American pop singer Khanoda performing under the pseudonym, Ann O’Dam ("Madonna" spelled backwards) released on September 24th 1991 (see 1991). "The Ballad of Auntie Vogue", which wasn’t a ballad at all, was Khanoda’s response to the pop icon’s 1990 number one hit, Vogue, which Khanoda called “two years of unstoppable torture for a dance that died two years prior.” Khanoda, who he himself vogued with a dance troupe which he performed during a promotion party for the Miramax film “Paris is Burning” at Philadelphia’s Trocadero theatre in 1991, sampled portions from the lines “don’t just stand there” and “strike a pose” from Madonna’s a cappella intro heard on the extended version of “Vogue” to form “don’t just strike a pose.” The track itself, with its slinky bass line and thump and pounce rhythms, was a mainstay in gay clubs throughout Philadelphia and New York City; often being sequenced in following the Madonna cut.

“Manscare” was a house and techno-infused romp and became just as popular as the Anti-Vogue anthem itself. Originally intended as a dance remix for a New Jack Swing track Khanoda produced titled, “Fool For Love,” the instrumental of the new mix was added at the last minute upon the urgency of the label pressing “The Ballad of Auntie Vogue” after hearing the track.
