The Arches (Glasgow)

The Arches is a bar, arts venue, theatre, live music venue and nightclub in Glasgow, Scotland, which first opened in 1991. [ [http://www.thearches.co.uk/aboutus.htm Venue history] ] The Arches is situated in the City Centre under Glasgow Central station and the West Coast Main Line in the brick arches that support the station. The venue has 65,000 square feet of floor space which is spread over two floors and seven arches.

The Arches Theatre Company has performed plays by writers such as Samuel Beckett and Tennessee Williams.

Nightclubs such as Pressure, Death Disco, Inside Out and Colours hold monthly events.

Voted 10th best club in the world in 2007 [http://www.djmag.com/index.php?op=news&story=newsfeat424] , and a favourite club for many of the finest DJ's in the world (namely Carl Cox, Judge Jules, Liquid Vision, Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Johnny Redstripe, Pete Tong, Paul Shields, Scott Theory and David Guetta).

On August 30th, 2008 The Arches was under review after police visited the club's monthly men-only gay night Burly and found men in various states of undress engaging in sexual activity in an area covered by black mesh. The Arches appealed this incident and remains open whilst it awaits a decision from the Sheriff Courts. [http://www.theherald.co.uk/news/news/display.var.2436541.0.0.php?act=complaint&cid=1868138]

Strathclyde Police uncovered the incident after receiving several complaints that "acts of public indecency" were taking place inside the nightclub.

The Arches is to appeal the decision.
