Kentlake High School is a public high school serving the ninth through twelfth grade in Kent, Washington, U.S.A.. It is part of the Kent School District.

Overview

Kentlake is a school of a little under 2,000 students. Like other high schools in the district, it served grades 10-12 when it opened. Because of the local population growth, the junior high schools became overwhelmed and Kentlake was transformed into a full high school. Since the 2004-2005 school year, it has housed grades 9-12.

History

Kentlake High School was designed by the architectural firm Burr Lawrence Rising and Bates and built in 1997. The school sits on a 40 acre wooded site with a view of Mt. Rainier and five acres of wetland overlooking Druid's Glen Golf Course, providing instructional areas for science programs. Built to accommodate 1600 students, the brick-exterior, two story facility has convert|232000|sqft|m2 for student use and extensive infrastructure which accommodates over 400 computers and other instructional technology currently in the building. Under a cooperative agreement with King County Parks, an adjacent ten-acre site provides additional fields for Kentlake's athletic programs. Specially designed instructional areas house programs in physical sciences, music, drama, physical education, marketing, fine arts, visual communication, health occupations, culinary arts, and sports medicine. Kentlake welcomed its first student body- the classes of 1999 and 2000 on September 2, 1996. Kentlake is one of the few schools to offer college credit courses such as marketing, oriented towards preparing students for the business world, as well as a CNA class which prepares students for the CNA test and explain the science of health and human biology. Their has always been an on going competition between the Health Sciences students and the Sports Medicine students to see who is more knowledagble. Other college classes include those offered by the University of Washington: U.S. History, Spanish, and French.

May 11, 2007

On Friday, May 11, 2007 at 2:09 PM, one minute before release, a teacher heard a noise that sounded like gunshots. The police were notified and the school was locked down until 5:00 P.M., at which time it was discovered that the noise was a chair stacking contest which had taken place in a classroom, and a nearby teacher heard the calamity and called the main office to call 911.
