HM Prison Low Newton is a prison and Young Offenders Institution located at Brasside, near Durham, County Durham, England. The prison was originally constructed in 1965 as a mixed remand centre. Since 1998 HMP Low Newton has been an all-female jail taking female prisoners from across the north of England, as well as lifers and juveniles.

Following a recent Security Upgrade at HMP Low Newton in Durham, the prison now holds ‘restricted status’ (high risk) women. [ [http://press.homeoffice.gov.uk/press-releases/hmp-low-newton-good-prison?version=1 Home Office - HMP Low Newton] ] The remaining High Security Female prisoners (restricted status) from Durham H-Wing (who were now serving on I-Wing at Durham (HM Prison) following H-Wings removal from the women's prison estate), were transferred to the HMP Low Newton 'High-Security Restricted Status Unit' following the security upgrade.
