"The King of Fighters 2003" is the tenth game in "The King of Fighters" series. It is the last "King of Fighters" game to be based on the Neo-Geo MVS hardware, and the first game in the series developed and published by SNK Playmore under their current moniker.

Plot

As indicated by the game's name, it takes place two years after the last canon King of Fighters game, "The King of Fighters 2001". According to the game's storyline, a new King of Fighters tournament is organized by an unknown host. The new tournament instituted several new rules, including a whole new team system.

The storyline of KOF 2003 focus on the ambition of a new fighter named Ash Crimson, who seeks out the three Sacred Treasures (Kyo Kusanagi, Iori Yagami, and Chizuru Kagura) for reasons unknown. With his partners Duo Lon and Shen Woo, Ash sweeps through the tournament with ease, defeating many fighters while showing off his arrogant and persistent personality. Near the end of the tournament, Ash and his companions encounter the tournament's mystery host, who happens to be none other than Chizuru Kagura herself. After fighting and defeating Chizuru in an impromptu battle, the Hero Team discovers that a mysterious young woman named Botan was controlling Chizuru through the use of chi-laced strings and that she tells the team her affiliation with a shrouded group known as "His Distant Land". Before Ash and his friends realize it, another person enters into the fray and reveals his presence to them when least expected. The unknown person, named Mukai, tells the Hero Team that his group had manipulated Chizuru into holding the KOF 2003 tournament so that he could find and break the Orochi seal in hopes of bringing the demonic entity known as Orochi back into the Earth for an unknown reason. Displaying and wielding tremendous powers of stone, Mukai fights the Hero Team from within a location of which the Orochi seal's power is bursting out of control and that Mukai tries to destroy Ash and his friends with all of his might, but Ash overcomes Mukai's Earth-based power and defeats the stone-wielding monster with his ventose flames. Upon kneeling in defeat, Mukai warns the Hero Team that his group will strike again in the future and that it'll seek out the power of Orochi so that the group can give it to their unknown master. Upon seeing Mukai disappear in a flash of light, the Hero Team decides to head their separate ways in knowing that the tournament is now over, but unknown to both Duo Lon and Shen Woo, Ash has other plans in store. Meanwhile at the Orochi seal's location, Kyo Kusanagi and Iori Yagami investigate the ordeal that's happening right now and realizes that an unknown threat may be tied to the Orochi power. Despite being injured in the earlier fight against the Hero Team, Chizuru rendezvous with both fighters and tells them that the "His Distant Land" group is trying to gain the Orochi power in hopes of giving it to their shrouded leader. Before Chizuru can explain anything further to her sacred teammates, Ash comes from out of nowhere and strikes Chizuru with his ventose flames, knocking her unconscious. Upon holding Chizuru in his arms, Ash uses his ventose power to drain Chizuru's energy so that he could gain her sacred treasure, the Yata Mirror. Kyo and Iori rushes to Chizuru's aid and tries to attack Ash with their own power, but the crafty fighter escapes from the scene and warns both of them that their sacred treasures will be his for the taking.
