The jugularforamen , a largeaperture in thebase of the skull . It is located behind thecarotid canal and is formed in front by thepetrous portion of thetemporal , and behind by theoccipital ; it is generally larger on the right than on the left sideContents
The jugular foramen may be subdivided into three compartments, each with their own contents.
* The "anterior" compartment transmits the
inferior petrosal sinus .
* The "intermediate" transmits theglossopharyngeal ,vagus , andaccessory nerve s.
* The "posterior" transmits thesigmoid sinus (becoming the internal jugular vein) and some meningeal branches from theoccipital andascending pharyngeal arteries.Clinical significance
