Edmar John Mednis (
March 22 ,1937 –February 13 ,2002 ) was an AmericanInternational Grandmaster ofchess (awarded in 1980), born inRiga ,Latvia . He was also a popular and respected chess writer.Biography
At the end of
World War II , joining the westward exodus in 1944/45, he — along with many other Baltic players, e.g. Arlauskas, Dreibergs, Endzelins, Jursevskis, Laurine, Ozols, Sarapu, Tautvaišas, Vaitonis, Zemgalis, etc., and Ukrainian players, e.g. Bohatirchuk, Popel, Turiansky, etc. — moved to the West.He took second place in the 1955 World Junior Championship, behind
Boris Spassky , drawing their individual game. He was the first player to beatBobby Fischer in a U.S. Championship. He played on the 1962United States Olympiad team and finished equal third in the 1961-62 U.S.Championship . Intournament s he finished third atHouston 1974, equal fourth atNew York 1980, and equal first atPuerto Rico 1984. ThePuerto Rico Chess Federation rather than theUnited States Chess Federation formally proposed him for the Grandmaster title. He played in the 1979Interzonal tournament in Riga, his birthplace.Mednis became best known as a
chess author. He wrote twenty-six chess books and hundreds of chess articles. He andRobert Byrne annotated many games forChess Informant . He was trained as a chemical engineer, then became a stock broker. In 1982, he wrote "Practical Rook Endings". He suffered a fatal heart attack in 2002 at Woodside,Queens, New York .ample games
