Joel Meyers

Joel Meyers is an American sportscaster and current play-by-play announcer of the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association.

Meyers joined the Lakers in 2003 as their radio voice, the year after Chick Hearn died. Two years later, he was moved from radio to television where he is now paired with Stu Lantz. Meyers replaced Paul Sunderland, who had succeeded Chick Hearn.

Meyers also calls Big 12 Conference college football games for Fox Sports Net and NBA games for ESPN Radio. He also worked National Football League games for Westwood One, but left that network after the 2006 season.

His professional resumé includes NFL telecasts on NBC, Los Angeles/Oakland Raiders radio broadcasts, San Antonio Spurs telecasts, various assignments for ESPN and FSN, and even the Los Angeles Lazers of the Major Indoor Soccer League. Meyers called the 2007 FIBA Americas Gold and Bronze Medal games with Steve "Snapper" Jones.

Due to his assignment calling the for Westwood One, Meyers was not at Staples Center on January 22, 2006, and missed the game in which Kobe Bryant scored 81 points for the Lakers against the Toronto Raptors; that was the second-highest single game total in NBA history. Bill Macdonald, a local sportscasting veteran, called the game instead.

Meyers also missed a game between the Lakers and the Golden State Warriors on January 7, 2006; Steve Physioc called the action on TV instead.

A St. Louis native, Meyers attended the University of Missouri, and once served as the public address announcer at Busch Stadium II for the St. Louis Cardinals. He and his wife, Carol, have two sons, Drew and J.J. They reside in Hidden Hills, California.
