It is operated by Gruppo Trasporti Torinesi (GTT), a public company controlled by the municipality ofTurin . The first phase of the system, known as Linea 1, has 14 stations and links Fermi station in Collegno withPorta Nuova railway station in Turin downtown.The line was opened on
February 4 ,2006 before the2006 Winter Olympics , with the last stretch connectingPorta Susa railway station toPorta Nuova opened onOctober 5 ,2007 . It is known for being one of the most modern subway lines in the world.The system charges 1

Line 1
The system, built with links to the city's extensive tramway system, was completed in October 2007, extending past Porta Susa to Porta Nuova with four additional stations. Later on, the line will be extended to
Lingotto district with six additional stations which will be completed by2010 . Two additional stations are planned to reach Southern boundary of the city, underPiazza Bengasi .Further West extension is planned to reach boundaries of
Collegno and reachCascine Vica district in the city ofRivoli . Plan includes four additional stations, includedCollegno FS which will interchange with railway central station of the city ofCollegno .Line 2
A second line is currently under planning. The line should connect South-Western suburbs of the city (
Orbassano andBeinasco ) with northern district ofBarriera di Milano . First 26 stations are already defined, starting fromMirafiori Sud district toBarriera di Milano , crossing Line 1 atRe Umberto station and touching crucial points asPolitecnico di Torino Technical University andPiazza Castello , one of the major central squares of the city.Part of the Southern track should be elevated to reduce building costs (starting from
Piazza Cattaneo toCimitero Sud . On Northern side, fromVanchiglia toRebaudengo , Subway will follow and old (currently abandoned) railway track, which was used to connect the old and abandonedscalo Vanchiglia to main Turin railway road.Extension is planned (4 stations) to cover suburbs of cities of

In addition to the VAL Metro system,
GTT operates two suburban commuter railroads: the Ferrovia Canavesana and the Ferrovia Torino-Ceres.Ferrovia Canavesana
The Ferrovia Canavesana connects the towns of Settimo,
Volpiano ,San Benigno Canavese ,Bosconero ,Feletto ,Rivarolo Canavese ,Favria ,Salassa ,Valperga ,Cuorgnè andPont Canavese to downtownTurin , having inTorino Porta Susa , the closest station to the city center.The Settimo station, just northern to
Turin , is particularly important, in that it allows the interchange with the Turin-Milan and Turin-Aosta inter-regional railroads, operated byTrenitalia .A bus shuttle in connection with the trains operates between
Rivarolo Canavese station,Ozegna andCastellamonte .A number of other stations within the city of
Turin are served as well: Torino Stura, Torino Dora, Torino Porta Susa and Torino Lingotto. An additional station (Torino Zappata) is under construction. LeavingTorino Lingotto the railway line serves three additional stations in the Southern Metropolitan area ofTurin :Moncalieri ,Trofarello andChieri . The section from Settimo Torinese to Trofarello utilizes the same tracks and stations of theTrenitalia lines.ee also
