List of television channels in Sweden

List of television channels in Sweden

This is a list of television channels that broadcast for a Swedish language audience. Typically, non Swedish content is subtitled, but maintains the original language soundtrack. Non Swedish programming intended for children is, however, usually dubbed into Swedish. Regardless of intended audience, many shows receive a Swedish title, which is used in programme schedules.

The five largest channels by ratings have been SVT1, SVT2, TV3, TV4 and Kanal 5 since the 1990s, with SVT1 and TV4 attracting the largest audiences. In 2006, the most watched non-"big 5" channels were TV4 Plus, TV6, Eurosport, Discovery Channel and MTV. There were never more than three national channels in the analogue terrestrial network: SVT1 (from 1956), SVT2 (from 1969) and TV4 (from 1992).

It should be noted many of the channels targeting Sweden aren't actually broadcasting from Sweden, but from other countries (mostly from the United Kingdom). This is done to avoid the Swedish Broadcasting Law which restricts advertising heavily.

"Channels holding a broadcasting license for the terrestrial network are marked "(DTT)"."

wedish private commercial networks

These are privately owned television channels that are solely, or almost solely, directed at Sweden. Many such channels don't broadcast from Sweden, but nevertheless target a Swedish audience.

TV4 is the only commercial channel ever to have broadcast nationally in the Swedish analogue terrestrial network, but the arrival of digital terrestrial television saw the TV4 monopoly on commercial television broken.
