Kerala . He was born to K. C. Mammen Mappillai (1873-1953) and Kunjandamma (- 1950) as the the youngest of the prosperous family of eight sons and a daughter.He graduated from the prestigious
Madras Christian College . He started his industrial life with a toy balloon manufacturing unit from a small shed near Madras (nowChennai ) in 1946. By 1952,Madras Rubber Factory ventured into the manufacture of tread rubber. Since then, the company has grown to become aINR 30 billion enterprise.In 1993, K.M. Mammen Mappillai was awarded the
Padma Shri award for his contribution to industry - the first industrialist fromSouth India to be given this honour. His brothers, K.M. Cherian, K.M. Philip and K.M. Mathew and nephew Mammen Mathew are also Padma Shri awardees. The eldest brother K.M. Cherian is also a Padma Bhushan recipient.References
